Alien Facts, Sorted: What’s Real, What’s a Hoax and What’s Still Unexplained

In September 2023 two tiny “non-human” bodies were laid out in glass cases before the Mexican Congress. Within months, forensic scientists in Peru had taken them apart: llama bones, human bones and modern glue. That is the problem with alien facts — the real ones and the fakes travel at the same speed. So this post sorts them. Every item below is labelled real, hoax or unexplained, verified for 2026.

72 secondsLength of the Wow! signal, 15 August 1977 — still the best candidate for an alien radio transmission, and still unexplained.

0Pieces of alien technology found by any US government investigation, according to the Pentagon’s 2024 historical review of 80 years of UFO files.

2023The year a former US intelligence officer told Congress under oath that the government holds crashed craft — a claim he has never backed with evidence.

Strange facts about aliens — sorted

Genuinely unexplained

1. The Wow! signal unexplained — a 72-second burst at the hydrogen frequency, picked up by Ohio State’s Big Ear telescope on 15 August 1977. It was never heard again. In 2024 astronomer Abel Méndez proposed it was a rare flare lighting up a cold hydrogen cloud — a natural explanation, but unproven.
2. The Fermi Paradox real — with 200 billion trillion stars, where is everybody? Serious proposed answers range from “life is rare” to “they are hiding” — the Dark Forest idea.
3. UAP sightings by military pilots unexplained — the 2004 “Tic Tac” incident filmed by US Navy pilots remains officially unresolved. The Pentagon’s UAP office has resolved most cases as balloons, drones and sensor artefacts, but a small residue stays open.

Documented history

4. Betty and Barney Hill, 1961 real case — the first widely reported abduction claim, in New Hampshire. Their accounts emerged under hypnosis, which psychologists now consider unreliable, but the case genuinely launched the modern abduction genre.
5. Alien abduction insurance exists real — a Florida company has sold $10 million policies since 1987 (lifetime premium: about $20). A London broker stopped selling its version after members of the Heaven’s Gate cult bought policies before their 1997 mass suicide.
6. Congress held a UFO hearing in 2023 real — ex-intelligence officer David Grusch testified the US holds “non-human biologics”. He offered no evidence; the Pentagon’s office says it found none.
7. NASA studies UAPs real — its 2023 independent panel concluded there is no evidence UAPs are extraterrestrial, but recommended better data collection. It now has a director of UAP research.
8. The ancient astronaut theory is 50+ years old real idea, rejected — popularised by Erich von Däniken in 1968. Archaeologists reject it; every “alien” monument has a documented human builder, and the theory tends to assume non-European cultures couldn’t build things.

Confirmed hoaxes

9. The Mexico “alien bodies”, 2023 hoax — Jaime Maussan’s two tiny mummies were examined by Peru’s forensic archaeologist Flavio Estrada: “dolls assembled with bones of animals from this planet, with modern synthetic glues.” A scientist reviewing Maussan’s own DNA data for Reuters found it indicated ordinary Earth life. Maussan’s 2015 “alien” was a human child.
10. The Alien Autopsy film, 1995 hoax — producer Ray Santilli admitted in 2006 that the “Roswell alien” was a latex dummy filled with sheep brains and chicken entrails, filmed in a London flat.
11. The Roswell “flying disc”, 1947 explained — the US Air Force’s 1994 report identified the debris as Project Mogul, a top-secret balloon array built to listen for Soviet nuclear tests. The secrecy, not aliens, fuelled the legend.
12. Crop circles hoax — two Englishmen, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, confessed in 1991 to making them with planks and rope since 1978, and demonstrated it for journalists.

The honest verdict

What we actually know in 2026

No physical evidence of extraterrestrial life has ever been verified. The best candidates — the Wow! signal, a handful of military UAP videos — remain unexplained rather than explained as aliens. Meanwhile the odds keep shifting: thousands of exoplanets, water worlds in our own Solar System, and the James Webb telescope sniffing atmospheres for biosignatures. The honest position is the scientific one: nothing confirmed, nothing ruled out, and better instruments every year.
